The BIG Immigration Debate

In light of the forthcoming Corporate Manslaughter Act in April 2008 that will require directors and managers to take specific steps to measure and deal with the risks their employees face when they drive on business, caution must be adopted when checking the driving licences of EU workers.

This key change affecting employer's exposure to legal action over at-work driving incidents could present more logistical problems for employers with the onus on them to be even more diligent checking licences of drivers who may not be as familiar with driving on our roads and our road system as we are.

All drivers using foreign licences that commit a motoring offence in the UK have a separate DVLA record created for them - and the licence from their country of origin will not have the prosecution added to it. More>>

That we lost our starting QB to injury seemed barely to slow us down, although we did lose a game. Still the dream was there. Our second QB was as good as the first, but another player was the heart and soul of that team. Pat Landry was a tight-end and linebacker who also played on the kick off team. He was a ferocious tackler whose bone rattling hits on opponents fired up the defense and the crowd. He was a monster with an irrepressible spirit and an infectious will to win. At mid-season we sat atop the district standings at 4-1, tied with the surprising Eau Gallie Commodores, whom we were to visit next. As that game began, we lost our second string QB in the first quarter. Our third string QB had recently been converted from receiver. He wasnt as talented as the other QBs but he was an unselfish leader around whom the team rallied. More>>

Kate Hudson's break-up silence

Kate Hudson reportedly failed to tell Dax Shepard their relationship was over.

Dax - who began dating the 'Almost Famous' actress in July - is said to have only discovered Kate had called time on their romance when his friend phoned him with the news.

A source told America's OK! magazine: "Dax got a phone call about it from a friend. He's upset that she didn't bother to say anything to him."

Turquoise Grill Brick Oven Bistro

It was a Saturday morning just after eleven when we walked into the Turquoise Grill Brick Oven Bistro on Norfolk at Kirby. I glanced at the menu and asked for the deluxe Turkish breakfast with a sausage omelet. My friend Jay Francis, who doesn't eat eggs, wanted some breakfast too, so he asked our server for a suggestion.

The waiter introduced himself as "Jim," the restaurant's owner, and apologized that he'd just opened for the day and it would take him awhile to get our breakfast ready. I told him not to worry. I was having the brakes done on my car and had a couple of hours to kill. Jay had picked me up at the mechanic's shop and joined me for a late breakfast.

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned I wasn't in a hurry, because Jim stood by our table for the next ten minutes and shot the shit with us. More>>

Viewers at home who dread another season of American Idol can relax, knowing that MittTV will stay on the air for at least a few more weeks.

Romney is nothing if not persistent. When a position gets in his way, he changes it. When he tells voters exactly what they want to hear, and that doesn't work, he moves on to the next state and tells them again.

In Michigan, the Romney campaign worked hard to show the world a New Mitt. Ana Marie Cox of Time wrote, "There was a different Mitt on display this morning. My first reaction was that *this* is a Mitt that could win a general." That's a stretch, but the New Mitt spin works for a reasonit has been true all along. Like the virgin snow that blanketed Michigan on primary day, he's a New Mitt every morning.

As Jonathan Cohn wisely noted in the New Republic before the vote, this New Mitt reprises many features of the version he kicked his campaign off with several Mitts ago. More>>

Should Student Loans Go to Market?

One way or another, just about every word out of the mouth of a lender (or of a critic of the student loan programs) these days is aimed, at least indirectly, at the occupants of the Capitol. With Congress contemplating potentially transformative changes in the financing and the structure of the guaranteed student loan programs, advocates for student loan providers, for colleges, and for student borrowers are doing everything they can to have their points of view heard.

Planning for a wedding is stressful, time-consuming and very expensive, especially for the bride. Although I had the responsibility of picking out my bridal party's attire for my recent wedding, my husband also suggested that I be in charge of picking out his party's attire as well since in his words, "the woman knows best." I had my mind set on selecting the men's tuxedos from one men's apparel store I visited about two months ago. However, I still wanted to shop around. One day before going to work, I wandered into a store on Ashley Street. To my surprise, the first thing I noticed as I entered was the fragrance of a nice cologne for men and gospel music, very different from the usual jazz or urban music that I hear when I enter other stores for men. I was greeted by three very nice and quite humorous gentlemen whose delightful nature and cheerful banter made it hard for me to actually do "serious" shopping. More>>

Natasha Steel prepares to face ex-husband, John Hogan, who killed ...

The former wife of a man who killed their young son during a holiday in Greece has said she fears that she will "erupt with anger" at his trial today.

Natasha Steel has not spoken to John Hogan face to face since he grabbed his two children and jumped 50ft from a hotel balcony in Crete in August 2006. Liam, 6, died almost instantly when he hit the concrete but Mia, then 2, suffered only a broken arm after her father and brothers bodies cushioned her fall.

Ms Steel, a 35-year-old casualty nurse, will sit just feet away from her former husband at the 19th century courthouse in the harbour town of Chania. Hogan, 33, who suffered a broken arm and leg in the fall, was moved for the trial from a high security jail on the Greek mainland to Crete last week. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of Liam and 12 years for attempted murder of Mia. More>>

Carnegie Hero Fund Commission honours 21 people

James Hood, 47, of Alpine, Wyo., rescued the three climbers who were stranded in a storm on Mount Logan in the Yukon in May 2005. Don Jardine, 51, Alex Snigurowicz, 45, and Erik Bjarnson, 41, were suffering from exposure on the mountain. Hood had to make three separate trips from a nearby staging area to rescue the men.

Also honoured were two Illinois brothers who drowned while attempting to save a struggling kayaker.

Bruce Sperling, 31, and Mark Sperling, 27, saw a man go over a dam in his kayak on the Fox River near Yorkville, Ill., on May 27, 2006.

The kayaker, Craig Fliege, 38, became caught in the swirling water.

The brothers ran into the river to try to rescue Fliege, but were also sucked into the current.

18 Holes With...

Before all eyes zoned in on beautiful, lush Medinah Country Club -- which, at 7,561 yards will play as the longest course in major championship history -- we had a chance to sit down for 18 holes of Q&A with PGA Head Professional Mike Scully. Scully, who was a lineman in the NFL for three seasons, explained his unlikely transition to one of the top job's in all of golf.

Scully also talked about following Tiger around for a practice round just two weeks ago and reports that he'll be shocked if Woods plays the way he did in the practice session and doesn't win quite handily.

No. 1 -- You come from a serious football background. You were an offensive lineman who played on the 1984 University of Illinois Rose Bowl team [which lost to UCLA] and you spent three seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs. More>>

Material girl: Costume designers 27 frocks plays starring ...

Such is the dream dilemma for a costumer when clothing becomes a character. Much like center-stage ensembles worn in HBOs "Sex and the City," the 27 dresses Katherine Heigls character, Jane, must sport as a constant bridesmaid in this romantic comedy are as spirited as the actress herself.

"Its memorable when it has personality," said Thomas in a telephone interview earlier this week. "They were really like another character. Or like 27 other characters."

The film was shot almost entirely in Rhode Island, and Thomas favorite scene is the last when - spoiler alert! - all 27 brides are lined up on the pier at Janes nuptials in the bridesmaid dresses she wore at their weddings.

Alongside the goth girl, theres the Japanese friend in a kimono, the "Gone With the Wind" getup from the plantation-themed wedding ("Theres nothing more fun than creating 10 hoop skirts"), and the hot pink zip-front L.A. More>>

Shed arsonist strikes again in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach residents are worried about a serial arsonist on the loose.

An arsonist that has been lighting up sheds struck again on Saturday night. Police and residents are concerned that houses could be next.

"We shouldn't have to live like this. It's a ridiculous, senseless crime. There's no reason for it whatsoever," said Richard Kistulentz, a resident of the inflicted neighborhood.

Kistulentz spent Sunday evening installing motion lights in his back yard as a precaution.

"The only thing that woke me up was people banging on my door and banging on my window because they saw the smoke driving by," said Nancy Lee, whose shed was burned down two weeks ago.

"There was old pictures. We stored all our Christmas decorations, photo albums. My parents' wedding pictures were in there," described Lee. More>>

Pakistanis call kin in GTA for news

Members of the Pakistani community in Toronto say they're the source of news for many relatives living under martial law in their native Pakistan.

Gripped by a national state of emergency, the flow of information to the average Pakistani has been stemmed by a state crackdown on Pakistani media outlets reporting on the country's crisis.

As a result, Pakistani citizens have been calling relatives in Canada and other countries for updates on the state of affairs in Pakistan.

Jamal Jeofry, president of the Pakistani Association of Toronto, said he's experienced troubles getting through to family and friends in Pakistan, but when he does they ask him what's going on in their own country.

"They don't know what is going on because there is no TV and the largest newspaper groups have been raided by the government," said Jeofry. More>>

School lauded for academic gains

Schwarzenegger has called for spending reductions of 10 percent, including a cut of $4 billion from the state education budget, to close a deficit that's projected at $14.5 billion over the next 18 months.

The governor acknowledged that he had intended to introduce a series of education reforms this year but had to pull back because of the budget crisis.

Schwarzenegger, too, said other schools would do well to follow Otay's example.

"They didn't get any extra money," Schwarzenegger said. "It was just because of the will and the passion of the principal and the teachers."

In 2004, 16 percent of Otay's second-through sixth-graders passed the state English test. Last year, 43 percent did. Over the same period, the school's math pass rate rose from 32 percent to 58 percent. More>>

The Shields were just two of the thousands on Sunday who braced sub-freezing temperatures and harsh winds to see the best of what the auto industry has to offer in 2008.
